Captain Lewis Ludington Scholarship

Captain Lewis Ludington Scholarship

The late Mr. Robert Hughes established this scholarship in 1986 to honor the career of his grandfather, Captain Lewis Ludington (1858-1934) and to benefit the student cadets at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. Capt. Ludington served as a youthful apprentice under his father, a Great Lakes sailing master, during and after the Civil War. He received his first command at age 18 and went on to spend 28 seasons as a master of various Great Lakes steam and sailing vessels. He remained active at sea until 1921 when he settled in Detroit with his wife and sons and established a successful newspaper and magazine distribution company. Mr. Robert Hughes died on September 6, 2003. He was a longtime supporter of both the Maritime Academy and the Dennos Museum Center, and was appointed a Fellow of NMC in September 1999.
