Corrine J. Naar Mathematics Scholarship

Corrine J. Naar Mathematics Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1964 by longtime NMC supporter Corrine J. Naar, whose patronage dates to the college"s early years. A native of Quincy, Michigan, Mrs. Naar lived in Chicago after her marriage and came to Traverse City in the summer after her husband, Edward, became involved with the Burwood Company. Burwood manufactured the now-prized “NMC Founder”s Plaques", depicting a hand holding a lamp signifying “learning”, which were given to those who donated $100 or more to the College"s first fund drive in 1951. Mrs. Naar"s generosity to the College includes a $5,000 loan in 1957 used to refurnish a building as a residence for women students, and then subsequent gifts to the general building fund. For her support of NMC, Mrs. Naar was named a Fellow of the college in 1969. She died in 1970 in Venice, Florida.
