Dorothy Helms Memorial Scholarship

NMC faculty member Hogan Helms established the Dorothy Helms Memorial Scholarship in 1984 in memory of his wife. A Michigan native, Mrs. Helms served as a member of the Women"s Auxiliary Volunteer Emergency Service at Bethesda Naval Hospital during World War II. After marrying in 1944, the couple relocated to Traverse City where they owned and operated Helms Medical Laboratory. Mrs. Helms was a charter member and past president of the Zonta Club in Traverse City as well as a past president of NMC"s Wigwam Club, later renamed the Barbecue Board. She died on July 5, 1984. Mr. Helms, also now deceased, joined the NMC faculty in 1968. He helped create the Aviation Program at NMC and served as its director until his retirement in 1980.
