The Marriott Scholarship

The Marriott Scholarship

The Olive and Maude Marriott Scholarship is an endowed nursing scholarship originally established in 1977 by Mrs. Carole Marlatt in memory of her grandmother, Mrs. Olive Marriott, and great-aunt, Mrs. Maude Marriott. The name was changed to the Marriott Scholarship in 1993, and now also honors the memory of their husbands (Edwin and Frederick Marriott); as well as Mrs. Marlatt"s father (Frederick McRae Marriott) and uncle (Ken Marriott). Olive Marriott, a schoolteacher, and Maude Marriott, a registered nurse, were double cousins. Their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters. They married brothers, and spent their married lives in the Elk Rapids area. Frederick McRae Marriott spent his career in the U.S. Air Force, serving in the European theater in World War II. He retired to Florida after his service, and died in 1993. Ken Marriott sailed the world as a Merchant Marine, before settling in Lake Havasu City, Arizona with his family in 1968. He died in 1999. Mrs. Marlatt, a 1957 NMC graduate, lived with her grandmother while attending college. Mrs. Marlatt was a member of the NMC staff from 1970 until her retirement in 1993. During much of her tenure, she served as the administrative assistant to NMC"s presidents, including William Yankee, George Miller, Lornie Kerr, Phillip Runkel and Tim Quinn. Today, Mrs. Marlatt is retired and lives in the Elk Rapids area.
