W. R. Angell Biology Scholarship

W. R. Angell Biology Scholarship

The W. R. Angell Biology Scholarship was established in 1984 to assist NMC students studying biology. William R. Angell was a downstate industrialist who owned North Manitou Island prior to the U.S. Government"s purchase of it as part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Starting in 1972, NMC faculty member William Scharf visited North Manitou to conduct research and became acquainted with Everett Haimes, director of the Angell Foundation. Following the government"s purchase of North Manitou, the Angell Foundation liquidated many assets. NMC was among several Michigan colleges to benefit from its generosity and used the funds to establish Biology scholarships.
